One of the instructors of the karate club approached me on Tuesday and requested the use of a few of our mats. I asked him what he needed them for (I wanted to train with them briefly if they were doing anything grappling related), but apparently they just want to prop them against the wall as punching bags.
I told him I wasn't sure how many people would be attending and offered him two mats. He said he probably needed at least three. He said that perhaps it would be easier to do this on Thursday.
I would like to give him three or four of our mats on Thursday as a sign of good faith. We are sort of the black sheep of the martial arts clubs at CMU, and I'd like to change that. Hopefully this will break down any barriers between our groups and we may see more crossover.
Since we will be working with limited mat space on Thursday, our lesson plan will probably be to drill more technique than usual. After that, instead of rolling two or three pairs at a time, we will probably just roll one pair at a time. We'll set up these matches competition style with time limits, points, and a referee. This will be good experience and a very demanding workout.
So basically, on Thursday we will do less free form rolling and more structured drilling. At the end we'll compensate for the lack of sparring time by running some high intensity matches.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday. Come and have a good time before you get drunk for Carnival.
