I was thinking that it would be cool to have some sort of martial arts event at CMU where different CMU clubs(and possibly from Pitt and around Pittsburgh) could compete against each other.
It would be a great way to see how well we'd measure up against more formally trained opponents
Also, I know that around May there's some big Pittsburgh martial arts competition at the Monroeville Expomart, which even has divisions for novices(under 1 year of training)
Anyway, maybe I'm just dreaming.....

Competition is a great idea. However, I'm not sure it would be possible for us to set up a competition between the different CMU clubs.
As far as I know, we are the only grappling club that meets at CMU. There are no other judo, sambo, BJJ, catch wrestling, etc clubs. We are the old Wrestling Club, so we can't exactly compete against them either.
There are other martial arts clubs that meet at CMU. However, since they don't train in groundfighting very much, if at all, I think it is highly unlikely that they would want to compete against us in pure grappling.
I also find it highly unlikely that they would want to compete against us in a more open format, say MMA rules. The other martial arts clubs at CMU train in a more traditional format. Their training methods are unsuitable for MMA competition, and they would have minimal chance of winning in such a format.
This is not to say that these martial arts are ineffective. These martial arts have been around for a long time and trained properly are excellent for self-defense. However, they are not designed to win in a one-on-one competition between two skilled opponents. Thus I don't think any of the other clubs would be willing to compete with us.
Competition with clubs from Pitt is a possibility. I know that there are grappling, wrestling, and judo clubs at Pitt. These clubs have shut down for the summer, but perhaps next semester something could be arranged.
Concerning the Kumite Classic in May, I know that a large number of grapplers in the area will be attending. I may be attending myself. If you are interested in competition, this tournament would be an excellent opportunity.

As a follow up to your post, we actually decided to have a spontaneous round robin tournament at our last meeting for the semester. You can read about it on the site.
The tournament went well, and next semester we will have some more. I will plan them out better in the future and give everyone advance notice.
